New Energy Efficient Lighting Technology Brightens the City of Perry’s Finances
[August 22, 2013] [Ann Arbor, MI] — Bringing the latest energy efficient lighting technology to Perry, Michigan’s charming 19th century downtown, the Energy Alliance Group of Michigan (EAG) will supply induction and LED replacement lighting to the City of Perry in September 2013. The new lighting will reduce energy use by 55% and save more than $9,000 in the first year while achieving a lifetime savings of over $130,000 in maintenance and replacement costs.
Following a 30-day trial of the technology, the City of Perry selected EAG to provide new lighting for its downtown, administrative office and parking lots, Department of Public Works building and water treatment facility. Currently, Perry spends on average nearly $10,000 in utility and maintenance costs each year on the lighting to be replaced. With the new technology installed, the average annual cost will fall to less than $5,000. The utility savings realized, in addition to the Consumers Energy lighting replacement incentives received, will finance 100% of the project and provide Perry with a 7% improvement to its annual cash flow.
“We are very pleased with the cost savings,” said Chuck Mudge, Director of Perry’s Department of Public Works. “Not only will our electric bills go down, but our maintenance costs will drop even more. The installation is simple and we will not need to replace bulbs and fixtures for years. Not only were we able to evaluate the product beforehand, but EAG completed a 20 year cost analysis and calculation and presented it in an easy to understand format for us to make the final decision.”
The majority of these savings will result from the installation of induction lighting technology manufactured by American Green Technology. This 100-year-old lighting technology, which uses an electromagnetic field and an inert gas to create light, is similar in design to fluorescent lighting technology but without a filament, which results in a lamp of unmatched life. Induction lamps typically last 100,000 hours or up to 25 years of service. Induction technology can outlast hundreds of incandescent bulbs and multiple high intensity discharge bulbs or fluorescent bulbs. The induction lighting comes with 10-year warranty and will operate in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit while providing instant lighting even after a power loss.
The Perry City Council approved the $30,000 contract with Energy Alliance Group of Michigan on July 19, 2013. A total of 74 new fixtures will be installed.
