Have you ever opened a utility bill and stared in disbelief at the amount? If you answered yes, then understanding the potential cost savings possible with energy supply options will be important to you. Sadly, most people reject the cost saving options because the concept can be confusing. Some people even say it sounds too good to be true, so let’s start by – eliminating the confusion.
A number of states have deregulated natural gas. For those that have, you have a choice of buying your gas from a state regulated supplier, or an alternate supplier that has been licensed by the state. The benefit of buying from an alternate supplier is that their rates can be lower than those of the regulated suppliers. They simply don’t have to purchase the same way as the regulated utility company. It’s the regulated supplier that continues to be responsible for the delivery systems, reading your meter, sending monthly bills and fixing any problems that may occur. The regulated supplier simply buys its gas or electricity from the alternate supplier on a monthly or quarterly basis and passes on the true cost to you, the customer.
“The benefit of buying from an alternate energy supplier is that their rates can be lower than those of the regulated suppliers.”
At this time approximately 22 states have deregulated their gas industry. Michigan is one of the deregulated states and they have a growing list of residential, commercial and industrial customers who choose a natural gas supplier offering low rates and realize savings without a cost to change providers, with zero alteration in service, and a very convenient switching process.
Here’s the question that stops most people from taking action: “How does the new company deliver gas through the other company’s pipes?” The answer is this: the utility companies have figured that out and not understanding how it’s done should not prevent you from saving money!
To determine if changing suppliers can save you money, all that is necessary is a copy of a recent gas bill so the present rate of natural gas can be compared to the rate offered by the alternate gas supplier. If it’s lower then SWITCH!
